Participation in this year’s trials are high, and signify a resurgence of the national team program and a renewed belief in the potential of the squads under the leadership of Andrea Fuentes, Lara Teixeira and Anna Voloshyna. The athlete-first approach of the organization is visible in the program has attracted high-level athletes to want to be a part of the special evolution that is artistic swimming in the United States. National team hopefuls will gather from clubs across the country this weekend in hopes of securing a spot on either of the teams.
The athletes who have advanced to this stage of trials will showcase their talents in front of national judges and national team staff. They will be evaluated on a range of skills both on land and in water that will test their technical, athletic and performance capabilities. At the end of the weekend, athletes will be selected for both the junior and senior national teams.
Lara Teixeira, High Performance Manager and Assistant Coach, is looking forward to evaluating the character and talent of the participants: “I’m excited to see over 35 athletes participate in trials. We are looking for well-rounded athletes through interviews and evaluations. Attitude, mindset and character are so important because it’s not just about technique. We are looking for athletes that are willing to come into the program and give their all to progress, put the team before themselves and get us back to the podium. It’s not an easy task, but the ones that have the passion to work towards these goals are the ones that we want on our team. There are big events coming up this quad for both teams and we need to have high-caliberprogram.”
Athletes selected for this year’s senior national team will be the first cohort to train in Los Angeles. The representatives of USA Artistic Swimming will swim for our country at international world championships in the coming year. As a part of the restructuring of the program, 20 athletes will be selected from this year’s trials and remain on the senior national team until the Olympic squad is chosen in 2023.
