FINA Cancels Qualification Tournaments in Tokyo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Olympic qualification tournament for artistic swimming has been cancelled while alternative dates and locations are evaluated, FINA announced.The artistic swimming tournament, last scheduled for May 1-4 in Tokyo, will be the host of duet and team performances that will determine what remaining countries are represented at the Olympic Games. Several other FINA-sponsored qualification events that were supposed to take place in Tokyo have also been postponed due to the country’s COVID-19 protocol for the events

This is the third time the tournament has been postponed but the first time the location has been re-evaluatedThe senior national team, who will represent the stars and stripes at the qualification tournament, has remained positive and driven despite every obstacle in their path, including these postponements. 

It doesn’t matter when or where the qualifier will be held, our team will continue to thrive in the face of adversity and adapt to the circumstances as we have throughout this entire season. Our fire and fight to get a USA team back in the Olympic Games is stronger than ever,” said senior national team member and 2016 Olympian Anita Alvarez.
