FINA Virtual World Series Premieres this Weekend

The first leg of the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series will premiere this weekend filled with high-level competition from across the world. The virtual stop hosted by USA Artistic Swimming and Canada Artistic Swimming will see 15 countries participate across two days of competition for viewers to enjoy. At a time when the pandemic and other world factors are still challenging our ability to meet in person, USA is proud to partner with Canada to offer an accessible competition opportunity for all.
Athletes from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland and the USA will represent their countries and display the resilience of artistic swimming as they compete for strong finishes at the first competition of the year. Canada’s extraordinary Karine Thomas and USA’s legendary Bill May will provide commentary for the technical competition, while May will keep viewers educated solo for the free portion on Sunday.
Routines from this virtual competition were filmed with very specific instructions and timestamps to emulate an in-person competition as closely as possible. Athletes filmed their performances in early to mid-February and promptly submitted them to be compiled for evaluation by judges from around the world during a live judging session thanks to Integrated Scoring Systems.
Saturday, March 19th viewers can watch the technical competition on USA Artistic Swimming’s website beginning at 9:00 a.m. MT. The day will begin with technical solo followed by male technical solo, technical duet, mixed technical duet and technical team. Fans can tune in at the same time on Sunday, March 20th to watch the free solo, free male solo, free duet, free mixed duet, free team and highlight categories followed by a gala showcase.
USA’s senior national team initially planned to participate in eight of the eleven categories but unfortunately had to settle for two as short-term injuries and additional challenges limited the ability to compete. You will see USA representation in the free duet portion of the competition by swimmers Megumi Field and Natalia Vega and as well as the highlight category. Both of these routines are new choreographies for the squad and will serve as their international debut.
